The first typewriter that was commercially available was originally invented by Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When this was invented in 1867 they had a huge demand for their product in turn leading them to sell the patent for it for 12,000 dollars which would be the equivalent of 193,548.39 dollars in that time.

Fun Facts |
The 1874 Sholes & Glidden typewriters made the "QWERTY" layout for the letter keys. During the period in which Sholes was still working on his invention to finaly work out what the best layout was other keyboard arrangements were apparently tried such as the "AZERTY" layout.
